Now may be the best time to begin training to become an administrative assistant. That is certainly the projection from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). BLS expects a 9% increase in demand for general administrative assistants over the next decade. For those who reach the Executive Level in this field, expectations are for a 15% increase in the number of positions available.

Some quick facts and projections from the BLS:

         * 362,000 positions added between 2006-2016 (estimated) make this occupation among those with the largest number of new jobs

*Opportunities will be best for those “with extensive knowledge of software application”

*Administrative assistants will perform fewer clerical tasks and take on roles of information and communication managers

*Administrative assistants should expect the career to continue to expand, becoming more varied and interesting throughout their working years.

*Administrative assistants can expect earnings to range from $27,450 to $41,550 (2006 figures).  Of course, earnings depend on training, experience and the field.

With the investments being made through the federal stimulus programs, many fields will be poised to create a large number of new jobs in the next year or so.  That makes this a perfect time to begin preparing for those jobs.

Most people have some notion what an administrative assistant does.  A closer look, however, shows just how vital their work is to the successful functioning of any business. Their contributions touch all other areas of any office and their duties are complex and interesting.

Just what are some of the qualities of a top-notch assistant?

Many essential skills can be attained through training. Certainly knowing Microsoft Office applications and the use of other office equipment is critical.  For an administrative assistant to advance, they should also have a good knowledge of terminology specific to that office such as the legal or medical field.

Communication skills are essential, both written and oral. Preparing documents, reports and correspondence requires strong writing skills.  Interaction with office personnel and telephone contacts requires great oral communication skills, along with discretion and diplomacy. A basic understanding of workflow patterns within an office environment is crucial.

A good administrative assistant must also be trustworthy and organized. They must also be able to multi-task, get along with others and promote a cordial work environment.  A good administrative assistant must adapt to new situations and demands as they arise and learn new procedures and skills.

Administrative Assistants will also find this to be a flexible career that can be adapted to many lifestyles and locations. They are often employed and well compensated by local governments.  Hospitals, colleges, professional schools, public schools and employment services also require the skill and expertise that administrative assistants bring to the workplace (Bureau of Labor Statistics).

Those with the skills and abilities will find not only a rewarding and in-demand career now but also a steady, secure career for the next decade and beyond.  Businesses are constantly trying to improve efficiency and an administrative assistant is key to efficiency.

Those who desire to advance to levels of more responsibility and prestige will have ample opportunities to prove their worth, be more involved at a higher level and receive recognition and reward for their efforts.
