What's New for Father's Day?
58Just when it seems there is nothing else in the gifts-for-dad department, along comes permanent focus (sometimes called auto-focus) binoculars! Now this is something that is almost perfect for any Dad.
These aren’t really new; actually the idea has been around awhile. But I had never heard of these until recently and they are sure worth adding to your gift list, either for Father’s Day or any other day you want to honor Dad with a gift that is unique and special.
So, what’s so special and great about these binoculars? The owner sets them for his eyes upon first use and that focus becomes permanent. That’s right, set once and they never have to be focused again. Pretty cool, huh? That means during sports events Dear Old Dad won’t miss a play while he fumbles to get the darned things focused.
These are also a unique gift, because they are for one person to use and one person only. No sharing! It would be like sharing your prescription eyeglasses. So, again, this is something just for that Great Guy.
Since there are no moving parts for adjustment, there are no parts to wear out. Permanent focus binoculars are also dust- and waterproof. Now, the day may come when old Dad’s eyes aren't quite the same as they are now and the first pair may need to be replaced. That’s the only downside to these binoculars as far as I can tell. But by then you’ll be looking for something to get him and he’ll have become so fond of these that a new pair will be just the thing.
While these are great for sporting events and long-distance viewing they aren't recommended for close-up bird-watching. Their focus ranges from 35 feet to infinity so they are good for watching large wildlife at some distance, checking out the scenery while hiking or observing marsh and waterfowl from the shore.
Most models are quite reasonably priced, too, usually under $50. At that price you might even throw in a couple of sporting events tickets and take Dad out to the game!
